Leaders: What Do You Value?

6/02/2020 By Jim Donovan High-Performing Teams Leadership

The other day I was on the phone with my good friend Dave who runs a 2,400-person organization, and we got onto the topic of organizational alignment.

I asked him what holds his organization together so tightly, and what allows him to get the results he’s getting. He replied, “One word: Values.”

I asked him to explain further, and he took it a layer deeper.

“We are completely spread out,” he said, “Geographically, culturally, politically, and lifestyle-wise—but our values hold us together. We may believe different things as people, but we agree to believe and live by a specific set of values when we come together as a company.”

He continued, “I obviously can’t be everywhere in the world at once, but because of our values, I don’t have to be. Values help our front-line managers make the right decisions when there is an important customer interaction hanging in the balance. Being tethered to our values helps every individual in the organization navigate the difficult questions that come up daily, and gives us a guidepost from which to act. Values are the glue that hold this business together.”

He went on to tell me that values are his main focus as a leader. At every kickoff, they focus on one of the six core values that make up the backbone of the organization. This helps them embed the values into the organization, and stay connected to them on a consistent basis.

Have you defined your company’s core values?

You know it’s time to focus on your values if:

  • You find your team making decisions that are out of alignment with the strategic vision of the company; or
  • Your managers are making decisions that are way outside the realm of what makes sense for the company.

Many of these bad decisions can be avoided by clearly defining your company’s values. It’s time to do away with these missteps and get your organization marching in lock-step towards your business goals.
